I believe that good -- even beautiful! -- website design should be accessible to everyone. Developing a complete website from scratch is a task that requires substantial time, creativity and skill that, in turn, requires substantial payment. (Being paid for work? Imagine that!) Still, I understand that the cost of a custom website sometimes just isn't financially feasible. This is especially true for artists, musicians, writers, activists and nonprofit organizations. These just happen to be the same people I feel a special kinship with. I long struggled with how to help share the power of the internet with starving artists -- and starving yoga studios, starving community centers, starving dancers, starving food co-ops, etcetera, etcetera -- without starving myself.
After working on dozens of creative and community-oriented websites, it became easy to spot the common ground amongst the designs. Musicians need the ability to post audio files & gig listings, studios need a calendar, visual artists need a gallery and everyone needs to be able to provide an easy way for users to contact them for more information. I spent over 6 months revisiting all my past designs as well as searching the web for inspiration. I then began developing a group of standardized layouts, each which would be useful for a certain type of my target clientele. I would explain the project by saying, "they'll be a smidge more than a free template, a smidge less than a fully customized website." In other words,
Here is how Smidges works:
The layout of the website pages as well as the maximum number and purpose of pages are set for each Smidge. I carefully considered the needs of potential "Smidgees" and created these layouts to fill as many of these needs as possible while being as flexible as possible at the same time. A custom suite of graphics plus font and color selection will transform the generic Smidge layouts into unique websites that you can fully call your own. Because half of the website (and thus, half my work) is standardized, I am able to charge 50-70% less for each website design. To further save you money, I provide a manual that will allow you to make simple text and photo updates to your website without having to hire someone.
Currently there are 3 layouts and soon there will be a total of 6 options. Smidges makes a lot of sense to me. In fact, I can't believe I didn't think of it sooner! I am able to provide clean, efficient and yes, beautiful websites to people who need them at an affordable price... and we can all afford to eat!
Doesn't this make sense to you, too?
